09/29/2007New year, new meeting time, new look (soon)
As people on the mailing list or attending the meetings already know, the club has changed meeting time and location for the first time in many years. Meetings are held every Saturday in the McClendon Tower Media Room, Keohane Quad, at 2 PM. More info is on the "Schedule" page. Also, the website has been moved to a new server. The club's message board should now be more stable, so go over there and post! Soon the main page itself will hopefully get a significant revamping.
08/27/2007Changes are Afoot!
It looks like the format and make up of the club will be going through many changes this year as we shift gears for a new audience. Join in on the message board and mailing list if you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see Duke Anime become!

Belated Update!
It's been a while since we've had an update, but there is news! First off, our collaborations with Screen Society for this semester have been decided. We're showing Sprited Away and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Spirted Away was actually shown back in January (it was on rather short notice), but it was excellent, the mailing list was notified in advance and we had a strong turnout, so it's all good.

Advent Children will screen at 8:00pm on April 1, in White Auditorium on East Campus. Yes, on April Fool's Day. While admittedly not of the same caliber as Miyazaki, Advent Children will at least be very pretty and shiny, and if you're a fan of FFVII, so much the better. Check out CineEast 9's lineup this year for other interesting Asian films. Personally, the original Godzilla looks to be fun!

Aside from that, the schedule has been updated for the current semester, so check it out if you're wondering what will be shown each week. The most significant change is that we are now doubling up on Honey & Clover each week so that we can also see the second season, which concludes the series.

We've also decided to add Now and Then, Here and There as a permanent weekly show, because Planetes isn't depressing enough. But don't let that scare you away – NTHT is good!

Shows for the Year Selected!
The first meeting is over and I think it went quite well! The shows we watched were:

Planetes
Honey & Clover
Keroro Gunso
Mushishi
Tsukikage Ran

Of those, Planetes is in by default (Presidential fiat :-)), and by vote we have Honey & Clover and — with overwhelming support — Mushishi. Looks to be a very good year.

New Year and New Movie!
Welcome back for a new year, everybody! This years' Student Activity Fair will be held on Friday, September 1 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm Correction! Due to our dear friend hurricane Ernesto the Fair has been postponed to next week, on Friday, September 8, from 4:00pm - 6:00pm on the new Bryan Center Plaza and we will have a table there, so be sure to stop by for more information on Anime Club this year. It's the 10th anniversary of our founding, so we hope to take things in a new direction!

We're also proud to annouce our first screening with Screen Society for this year, the much-heralded, but little watched Steamboy, from Katsuhiro Otomo, who is more famously known for Akira. Look for that in Griffith Theater in the Bryan Center on September 6 at 8:00pm.

Steamboy

By the way, our first meeting will be on Friday, September 8, at 7:00pm in our usual venue of Zener Auditorium. Note that this is after the Steamboy screening and on the same day as the Student Activity Fair. We hope to see everyone there!

Tokyo Godfathers!
Our movie for the Spring 2006 semester has been selected! Again, in collaboration with the good folks over at the Screen Society, we will be screening Tokyo Godfathers, by Satoshi Kon (Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent), as part of the "CineEast 7: New East Asian Cinema" film series.

Tokyo Godfathers will screen in the Bryan Center's Griffith Film Theater on February 8, at 8:00 PM. Admission is free.

Satoshi Kon is one of Japan's most respected anime film makers, so this should be very good!

New Semester!
Welcome back for the new year! I hope you all enjoyed your break more than I did. We'll be resuming our weekly meetings starting this Friday, Jan. 13, at 7:00 PM. Please note, however, that for this first week we won't be meeting in Zener, but in Soc Psych 126, further down the hall. Room 126 is at the end of the hall, by the stairs — there will be signs up on Zener, but you can't miss it. Even if you go to the wrong end of the hall, that narrows down the possibilities tremendously.

Starting on Jan 20 we'll be back in our normal venue of Zener for the remainder of the school year.

Finally, we will be continuing with our five main shows (Kaleido Star, Samurai Champloo, Stellvia, School Rumble, and Last Exile), in addition to the weekly OVAs. Some nice new shows are airing in Japan, so it should be good.

Film Screening in Griffith!
Our first special film screening for this year is next Monday, October 24 in the Griffith Film Theater. In collaboration with the Screen Society and their "Genes and Screens" cinema series we'll be showing that renowned science fiction classic, Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell:

Yes, we know it's old, but it's still a classic, and if perchance you've never seen it (or want to see it again) now is you chance to watch it on the big screen (and sans that magical white fog). For those not in the know, Griffith is in the Bryan Center, on the same floor as McDonald's and the Post Office. Hope to see you there!

Shows for the Year!
The 5 shows we will follow for the year have been decided:

Kaledio Star
Samurai Champloo
Uchuu no Stellvia
Last Exile
School Rumble

Seems like a reasonably balanced lineup. Remember that we also have time to show two random OVAs or episodes from other shows each week, in addition to the five permanent members. Think UN Security Council, but with schoolgirls. Please take a look at the schedule for the full details.

Uchuu no Stellvia
Last Exile
